Leclerc Ponders Performance Shortfall After Hungarian Qualifying

Charles Leclerc found himself in a reflective mood after the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying session, where he couldn't keep pace with Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris. The Ferrari driver admitted that his speed "was never to the level" of Hamilton's, with issues in Turns 1 and 12 haunting his performance.

Leclerc, who had previously taken pole at the Hungaroring in 2025, clocked a best lap of 1m 17.445s. This fell short of Hamilton’s time of 1m 17.219s and Norris's pole-setting 1m 17.207s. "I'm a bit disappointed," Leclerc confessed, noting his inability to solve the challenges presented by the two troublesome corners earlier in the day. "I was losing three-tenths in Turn 1 and Turn 12," he lamented, vowing to address these issues for the race.

The wind added another layer of complexity, with Leclerc admitting he hadn't anticipated its change and failed to adjust the car setup accordingly. "I felt off from the morning," he explained, describing the qualifying as "quite messy." A yellow flag in Q2 further hampered his efforts, leaving him in a game of catch-up.

Despite these setbacks, Leclerc will start ahead of Hamilton in the race, courtesy of a three-place grid penalty handed to his teammate for impeding Oscar Piastri. Looking forward to the Grand Prix, Leclerc emphasized the importance of a strong start on the tight Budapest track: "It's a long race tomorrow, and I do believe our race pace is strong," he said, acknowledging that others have made significant improvements since the previous day.

The challenge remains, but Leclerc seems ready to tackle it head-on, hoping that his race pace will match the competition on Sunday.
