Max Verstappen Suggests F1 Retirement Could Follow Red Bull Contract

Max Verstappen has hinted that he might retire from Formula 1 after his extended Red Bull contract ends in 2030. At that point, he will have spent half his life in the sport and is considering other interests.

Max Verstappen, the reigning Formula 1 champion, has indicated that he may not follow in the footsteps of veterans like Fernando Alonso by staying in the sport into his 40s. The Dutch driver, who has just extended his contract with Red Bull Racing until 2030, suggests that he might explore other interests once his record-setting tenure ends.

Verstappen's career with Red Bull began in 2016 after his promotion from Toro Rosso, and since then, he has secured 72 Grand Prix victories and four world titles. His contribution also helped the team clinch the Constructors’ Championships in 2022 and 2023. However, by the time his contract wraps up, Verstappen will be 33, having dedicated half his life to Formula 1.

Discussing his future with the Press Association, Verstappen reflected, "Staying here until then would mean I have dedicated more than half of my life to Formula One, and that is probably a bit too much." He continued, "I have extended for a few more years, and then I will look again and say to myself, ‘Can I commit 100 percent?’ and if not, or there are other fun things around that deserve more time, then maybe I don’t continue."

Verstappen also mentioned the desire to spend more time at home and be present as his children grow up, hinting that family life could take precedence over his racing career.

Despite entertaining discussions with other top teams like Mercedes and McLaren in recent years, Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull, where he feels a strong sense of belonging. When asked about the possibility of joining Ferrari, a move made by other stars like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, Verstappen was clear about his priorities: "I only want to win. I am not a nostalgic type. Do I have a lot of respect for the (Ferrari) brand? Absolutely. But if that means you then commit yourself, and you are driving P5 or P6, what’s the point?"

Verstappen's remarks underscore his performance-driven mindset and loyalty to Red Bull, which he describes as a "second family." For now, the allure of building on his existing success with Red Bull outweighs any romantic notions of racing for the iconic Italian team.
