McLaren is planning further upgrades for their MCL40 as they strive to improve their performance after recent struggles. Both drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, have highlighted areas needing improvement, with a focus on slow-speed cornering.
McLaren is gearing up for a series of upgrades to its MCL40, hoping to reverse a recent dip in performance. Team boss Andrea Stella confirmed that new developments are on the way for the 2026 season, aiming to boost their competitiveness after an underwhelming showing at the United States Grand Prix. The race saw Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finish fifth and seventh, respectively, marking another round without a podium finish — their longest such streak since 2023.
Earlier this year, McLaren seemed to have found their stride with significant upgrades at the Hungarian Grand Prix, leading Norris to victories in Budapest and Zandvoort. However, since then, they've struggled to keep pace, particularly as rivals like Red Bull have surged back to form, dropping McLaren to fourth in the Constructors’ standings.
Oscar Piastri, who last found himself on the podium in May at the Miami Grand Prix, pointed out that while McLaren's upgrades are effective, other leading teams are outpacing them with their developments. "I think it’s a bit of where we are at the moment. I don’t think we’re massively strong," Piastri remarked, noting how competitors like Mercedes and Ferrari have been enhancing their cars.
Lando Norris echoed these sentiments, identifying slow-speed cornering as a persistent weakness, despite regulatory changes. "You hope that you put something on and it’s magical," Norris said, noting that while other teams, like Ferrari, continue to improve, McLaren still lags in crucial areas.
In response, Stella outlined plans for more upgrades in upcoming races, specifically targeting the Brazilian and Las Vegas Grands Prix. "There will be some more stuff coming," he assured, aiming to consistently challenge for podiums and victories once again.
With high hopes pinned on these updates, McLaren is determined to address their shortcomings and climb back up the competitive ladder. The team will be closely watched as they implement these changes in the final races of the season.
