McLaren's Dialogue with Norris and Piastri: A Work in Progress

McLaren's Andrea Stella emphasizes ongoing discussions with drivers Norris and Piastri following their on-track incident in Singapore. The team aims for a united front to strengthen their position in the championship.

McLaren's team principal Andrea Stella has confirmed that discussions are ongoing with drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri after their on-track collision in Singapore. The incident, which occurred during the Sprint race at Marina Bay, saw both McLaren cars spin after contact, with only Norris managing to finish the race in P8. The team is keen to move past assigning blame and instead focus on creating a cohesive strategy moving forward.

The clash happened as Norris and Piastri battled for P6 on the final lap. While Norris initially defended his attempt to overtake, he later conceded that the move was ill-advised. Piastri accepted his teammate's apology, and both drivers are reportedly looking ahead.

In a positive turn, Norris even offered to assist Piastri during the latter stages of the main Grand Prix, as Piastri was chasing down Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari. This gesture was appreciated by Stella, who noted that the internal conversations are far from over.

Reflecting on the incident, Stella told PlanetF1.com and others, "I classified it as unacceptable, which is a statement that comes from the team principal. But I was very encouraged by the fact that it is a statement that very rapidly came from our drivers as well."

Stella emphasized that the focus of ongoing discussions is not to rehash whether Norris was justified in his maneuver, but to ensure that all parties understand the importance of team unity. "The conversations are about leading together as a team, prioritizing the collective interest over individual ambitions," he explained.

Stella expects this mindset to be evident both publicly and in private meetings, highlighting the need for synergy between the team and its drivers. McLaren, currently third in the 2026 Constructors’ standings, is keen to maintain its position with Ferrari 105 points ahead in second and Red Bull trailing by just seven points.

As McLaren heads into the next series of races, the team is focused on fostering a stronger, more united front, both on and off the track.
