McLaren's strategic foresight helped them outmaneuver Lewis Hamilton at the Singapore Grand Prix. Opting for soft tyres, McLaren avoided the pitfalls that Ferrari fell into with their split strategy.
McLaren showed strategic acumen at the Singapore Grand Prix, anticipating a challenge that would trip up Lewis Hamilton in his Ferrari. As Ferrari decided to split their tyre strategies between drivers, McLaren made a unified call, avoiding the medium tyres that Hamilton started with.
Charles Leclerc began from the front row on soft tyres, while Hamilton, starting third, opted for mediums due to Ferrari's split strategy aimed at countering Red Bull's pole-sitter Max Verstappen. The soft tyres, showing unexpectedly low degradation, proved superior, forcing Hamilton to pit first among the leading trio.
McLaren, predicting the struggles that medium tyres might bring, chose to start both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri on softs. "We didn’t split the starting tyre between our two drivers because we thought that the medium wasn’t a great tyre," McLaren team principal Andrea Stella explained. They aimed to capitalize on early race phases, avoiding the scenario Hamilton found himself in, which forced an early pit stop.
Despite hopes for a safety car to gain a strategic edge, McLaren maintained their initial positions post-stop without such a break. Hamilton's decision to commit to a one-stop strategy, despite Ferrari's expectations of a pit under the virtual safety car, left him vulnerable to Norris and Kimi Antonelli.
An off-track moment for both Hamilton and Norris at Turn 1 allowed Antonelli to overtake. Norris eventually passed Hamilton, followed by Piastri, who managed to catch the struggling Ferrari despite an additional pit stop to address a slow puncture. McLaren's strategy thus enabled them to sidestep the difficulties that ensnared Hamilton and maintain competitive positions.
