Mekies Applauds Hadjar's Stellar Podium Return in Baku

Returning to Formula 1 after a wrist injury, Isack Hadjar impressed with a podium finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, earning high praise from Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies. Hadjar, who had been sidelined since the summer break, took a cautious approach during practice but showed his mettle by qualifying fourth, even outpacing teammate Max Verstappen.

In the race, Hadjar allowed Verstappen to pass early on, a strategic move that showcased his maturity and ensured both Red Bull drivers remained competitive. When Oscar Piastri faltered at Turn 1 late in the race, Hadjar capitalized, moving into third place. Mekies described Hadjar’s performance as 'outstanding,' emphasizing the driver’s pain-free return and steady buildup of pace over the weekend.

"The most important thing was that he felt good in the car," Mekies said. "Baku is unforgiving, but Isack approached it with calm and energy."

Hadjar's savvy decision-making during the race impressed Mekies, who noted the young driver's growth in racecraft and emotional control. "He’s showing cleverness on track and managing his emotions well," Mekies added. "These are signs of his progress and speed, which have been evident since he joined us."

Red Bull has confirmed that Hadjar will stay on for the 2027 season, following a year of notable improvement, including a Monaco podium. Mekies is eager to continue nurturing Hadjar’s development, suggesting that the team is committed to providing an environment where the French driver can thrive.
