Lando Norris' gesture during the Singapore Grand Prix highlighted McLaren's focus on teamwork after a recent clash with Oscar Piastri. Team boss Andrea Stella sees this as proof that his message on prioritizing team goals is resonating.
After a less-than-ideal clash with Oscar Piastri during the Singapore Sprint, Lando Norris seemed determined to make amends come race day. During the Singapore Grand Prix, Norris asked his team if there was anything he could do to assist Piastri, who was dealing with a slow puncture-induced setback. While his offer wasn't needed in the end, it was a clear indication of a shift in focus towards team objectives.
Norris explained his reasoning post-race: "Oscar was unfortunate with a puncture, and I had my own issues with the car. It seemed more beneficial to help Oscar climb back up the order rather than chase down Kimi [Antonelli], given the gap and traffic."
Andrea Stella, McLaren's team principal, found Norris' gesture encouraging. After the sprint incident, Stella had been vocal about the need for the drivers to put the team's interests first. He noted that Norris' offer was a step in the right direction, indicating that the drivers were aligned with the team's ethos of unity and collective effort.
Stella elaborated: "What happened yesterday was unacceptable, but there's been a positive response from our drivers. We're having ongoing discussions not about the incident specifics, but about how we can lead together as a team, prioritizing the collective good over individual gains."
The team’s strategic decisions during the race also paid off. Both drivers started on soft tyres, which Stella explained was to avoid the pitfalls experienced by Lewis Hamilton, who struggled with tyre degradation on mediums. McLaren hoped for a safety car to capitalize on a reduced pit delta, but the race proceeded without one. Despite this, both drivers managed to secure a commendable fourth and fifth place, a result Stella and Norris considered the best possible given the circumstances.
Reflecting on the race, Stella noted, "In terms of what we could achieve on merit, fourth and fifth was probably the best outcome. We benefited from Hamilton's tyre issues, which made overtaking easier for us. While we might have missed a podium opportunity, given our recent struggles, it's a result we can build on as we look forward to the upcoming triple header with some new upgrades."
Ultimately, Norris' actions and the team's solid race strategy demonstrate a renewed focus on teamwork at McLaren, setting a positive tone for the remainder of the season.
