Racing Bulls Must Rethink Lawson's Replacement with Tsolov

Racing Bulls face a critical decision as they consider replacing Liam Lawson with Nikola Tsolov for the 2027 F1 season. This move might signal a lack of ambition to compete with top teams.

If Racing Bulls are considering swapping out Liam Lawson for Nikola Tsolov in 2027, it could be seen as a sign they've given up on the idea of moving to the front of the grid. The team, based in Faenza, might end up confirming its role as merely a junior team to Red Bull rather than a true sister team.

Tsolov is a promising talent, no doubt, but the narrow opportunities in F1 mean many skilled drivers are left waiting in the wings. Alan Permane, the team boss, has already pointed out Tsolov as the next in line from the Red Bull junior ranks. Yet, if Racing Bulls are serious about climbing up the grid, constant driver changes won't help their cause.

Currently, Arvid Lindblad is still in his rookie season and has performed well enough to secure his spot for next year. This, unfortunately, places Lawson in a precarious position. If Lawson is pushed out to make room for Tsolov, Lindblad, despite his youth, would assume a senior role. Meanwhile, Tsolov would be just getting his feet wet with F1 machinery.

The frequent shuffling of drivers disrupts team stability and development. It requires engineers to adapt to new driving styles repeatedly, which is hardly conducive to progress. Racing Bulls' current car, the 2026-spec VCARB 03, is noted for being quite manageable, which has helped them secure P5 in the constructors’ standings. However, to challenge the sport's top teams, Racing Bulls need continuity and leadership.

Replacing Lawson with Tsolov could undermine the team's potential to advance. The focus on grooming drivers primarily for Red Bull dilutes F1's competitive edge. If Racing Bulls proceed with this change, it might reflect their real ambitions—or lack thereof—in the sport.
