Ferrari junior Rafael Camara has been promoted to a full-time Formula 1 seat with Haas for the 2027 season. The Brazilian driver currently leads the Formula 2 standings and has impressed with his performances in junior categories.
Rafael Camara is poised to make his Formula 1 debut with Haas in the 2027 season, having inked a multi-year contract with the American team. The Brazilian, a standout in the Formula 2 championship, is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy and has been climbing the motorsport ladder since 2022.
At 21, Camara has already left a significant mark in single-seater racing. After joining the Ferrari Driver Academy, he claimed victory in the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship. His success continued in Formula 3, where he matched Arvid Lindblad's record for the highest win percentage, before advancing to Formula 2, where he currently holds a seven-point lead.
This season, Camara has secured three Feature Race wins and four additional podiums, showcasing his prowess over competitors like Red Bull's Nikola Tsolov. His talents were further highlighted during an F1 test in August at Portimao, where he handled Haas' 2025 car with notable skill.
Camara expressed his enthusiasm about joining Haas, stating, "I’m very happy to be joining TGR Haas F1 Team as a Formula 1 driver. It’s an important step in my career, and I’m grateful to Gene Haas and Ayao Komatsu for their trust. I also owe a lot to the Scuderia Ferrari Driver Academy and my family for their support. Now, I’m focused on preparing for this new challenge, working closely with the team, and continuing to develop as a driver."
Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu praised Camara's abilities, noting the young driver's impressive achievements in junior formulas and his remarkable performance during a testing session in Portugal. "Rafa managed to create an environment to get the best out of himself," Komatsu remarked, highlighting the team's commitment to nurturing Camara's talent and providing a supportive atmosphere.
Team owner Gene Haas echoed these sentiments, expressing excitement about Camara's potential in Formula 1. He drew parallels to Ollie Bearman's successful transition from the Ferrari Driver Academy, emphasizing that young drivers like Camara are well-prepared for the challenges of F1 and can make a significant impact.
Camara's promotion follows the announcement of Esteban Ocon's departure from Haas at the end of the current season. Meanwhile, fellow Ferrari-backed driver Ollie Bearman is expected to remain with the team.
As Camara prepares to step onto the F1 stage, all eyes will be on how the young driver handles the pressures of motorsport's pinnacle and continues his ascent within the sport.
