Ralf Schumacher believes Kimi Antonelli, on the brink of his first F1 world title, still has much to prove post-victory. Antonelli's strong season has him leading the standings, but Schumacher emphasizes the importance of continued growth.
Ralf Schumacher has a word of caution for Kimi Antonelli as the young driver edges closer to his inaugural F1 world championship title. While Antonelli could clinch the championship at the upcoming United States Grand Prix, Schumacher insists the 20-year-old still has a lot to demonstrate in the future.
Antonelli currently leads the standings by 102 points over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, with Lewis Hamilton trailing further behind. A 23-point advantage over Russell and a 14-point edge over Hamilton in Austin could seal the title for Antonelli this weekend.
However, Schumacher predicts that Antonelli's championship win might not be confirmed until the Brazilian Grand Prix. "More in the direction of Brazil," Schumacher speculated, suggesting that the youngster's title aspiration may take a bit longer to materialize.
This season, Mercedes dominated the early races, winning six Grands Prix initially, with Antonelli taking five of those victories. But as the competition heated up, Antonelli faced challenges, securing only three wins in the subsequent 11 races. Despite this, he remains a strong contender for the championship.
Schumacher commends Antonelli for his strategic approach, likening him to legends such as Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, and Max Verstappen. "He kept his nerves together, didn't break the car because he knew, okay, I need the points," Schumacher remarked, highlighting Antonelli's ability to remain composed under pressure.
While praising Antonelli's achievements, Schumacher also stresses that the true test of Antonelli's abilities will come in the following years. "It would be his first world title, and we’ll have to see how he deals with it afterwards," Schumacher stated, pointing out that every great driver faces tough times.
As Antonelli stands on the cusp of greatness, he's already being compared to some of the sport's most iconic figures. Schumacher's remarks serve as both a compliment and a reminder that even those destined for greatness must continue to prove themselves over time.
