Red Bull's Pre-Sprint Jitters: Verstappen Overcomes Concerns for Singapore Pole

Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Singapore Sprint despite early issues that left Red Bull's chief engineer looking uneasy. Martin Brundle noted the team's tension before Verstappen's remarkable lap.

Max Verstappen clinched pole position for the final sprint race of the season in Singapore, but it wasn't all smooth sailing for Red Bull. Early in the qualifying session, things looked dicey for Verstappen, despite the team's typically dominant pace. Verstappen went on to share the front row with George Russell, while Charles Leclerc secured third. Yet, there was a moment when Verstappen's pole position seemed improbable.

Sky Sports F1's commentary team, Martin Brundle and David Croft, observed some unease in the Red Bull garage. With Verstappen yet to set a time, Croft noted, "I’ll tell you why Max Verstappen hasn’t come out yet. They are looking into something at the rear of his Red Bull. Paul Monaghan, the chief engineer, is looking a little bit agitated, shall we say." Brundle added, "He did look pretty unhappy about something, didn’t he?"

Despite the apparent concerns, the issue wasn't severe enough to derail Verstappen's efforts. He soon emerged on track to set a lap time over a tenth of a second quicker than Russell, securing pole position. Brundle later praised Verstappen's performance, calling it yet another "stunning lap" from the Dutchman. He remarked on Verstappen's ability to excel under pressure, likening his form to previous dominant seasons.

Verstappen's performance suggests that the Red Bull car remains the one to beat, leaving Mercedes and their new upgrades struggling to keep pace. As the season concludes, Verstappen looks set to finish as the fastest driver on the grid, reminiscent of his form in 2024.
