George Russell had a frustrating outing at the United States Grand Prix, finishing eighth and struggling to understand his car's lack of pace. Meanwhile, teammate Kimi Antonelli celebrated a victory, putting him on the verge of clinching the championship.
George Russell found himself scratching his head after a disappointing performance at the United States Grand Prix, where he finished in eighth place. While his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli took a commanding victory, Russell was left pondering what went wrong. The young Briton's troubles were compounded by a five-second penalty for veering off track and gaining an advantage over McLaren's Oscar Piastri on the first lap.
Starting from sixth, Russell's race was derailed by the penalty, which he served during his sole pit stop, causing him to slip further down the order. Despite his efforts, he found himself stuck behind Piastri, ultimately finishing 1.6 seconds adrift of the McLaren driver.
Reflecting on the race, Russell admitted, "Yeah, it was a very bad day. Don’t really know why." He noted that his car only performed well for about six of the 50 laps, leaving him mystified about the sudden drop in performance. "I need to come back stronger for Mexico," he added.
Antonelli's victory in Austin marked his ninth win of the season, bringing him tantalizingly close to securing the championship title. He now leads Russell by 123 points in the standings, with only 125 points left to contest. Adding to Russell's concerns, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton closed in on him for second place in the championship, trailing by just one point after finishing fourth in Austin.
When asked about the frustration of seeing his teammate excel while he struggled, Russell said, "Right now, I don’t have the answers and, if I did, I wouldn’t be in this position. So, yeah, I need to try and work it out with my team."
The Formula 1 circus now heads to Mexico City for the next race, where Antonelli could become the sport’s youngest-ever World Champion. The pressure is on for Russell to understand his car's issues and fend off challenges from rivals like Hamilton.
