Mercedes boss Toto Wolff expects a fierce battle among top teams in 2027, citing Red Bull's recent resurgence. Despite a slow start, Red Bull has made significant gains, positioning Max Verstappen as a formidable contender.
Toto Wolff, the man at the helm of Mercedes, is preparing for a gripping season in F1 2027. While Mercedes started strong this year, the competition has intensified with McLaren, Ferrari, and notably Red Bull, all stepping up to the plate with race wins.
Red Bull's journey has been particularly striking. Beginning the season somewhat off the pace, the RB22 was initially lagging by up to 1.5 seconds per lap. However, the team has made impressive strides, with Max Verstappen securing the last two race victories with relative ease. Although this turnaround may be too late for a championship bid this year, Wolff sees it as a signal of the fierce competition to come.
"You really have to tip your hat to Red Bull for their progress," Wolff remarked. "They've developed the car into an impressive package, and with Max Verstappen feeling at one with it, the results speak for themselves."
Verstappen has indeed been the fastest driver in recent races, and Wolff is eager to see how Mercedes' own upgrades will measure up. He remains confident that next season will see a "full-on fight" among the top teams, with Red Bull firmly in the mix.
Red Bull's technical director, Pierre Waché, shared insights into their comeback. Starting with fundamental issues, the team tackled problems in steering, weight, and energy management. These efforts have clearly paid off, allowing Verstappen to clinch back-to-back wins as the season progressed.
In short, as Red Bull's resurgence gains momentum, Wolff predicts an electrifying contest next year, with all top teams vying for supremacy.
