Toto Wolff Applauds Kimi Antonelli's Remarkable Monza Comeback

Kimi Antonelli's performance at the Italian Grand Prix was nothing short of spectacular, as the young Mercedes driver stormed from the back of the grid to claim victory at Monza. Starting from 19th due to a power unit change, Antonelli's drive was a masterclass in overtaking and strategy.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was effusive in his praise, describing Antonelli's path to victory as "amazing." Despite starting on the back foot, Antonelli wasted no time, gaining seven positions within the first few laps. His progress was momentarily halted by a red flag triggered by Charles Leclerc's crash, but the Italian was undeterred.

Once the race resumed, Antonelli continued his charge, overtaking teammate George Russell for the lead by Lap 18. A Virtual Safety Car mid-race allowed Mercedes to split their strategies, with Russell staying out on worn hard tyres while Antonelli opted for fresh mediums. This decision proved pivotal, as Antonelli managed to outpace Russell and secure the win.

Speaking to _Sky Sports F1_, Wolff highlighted Antonelli's composed and calculated approach: "He kept his head down, took no risks at the beginning, and then one by one, one by one [passed his rivals]. I must really say, an amazing drive." Wolff also acknowledged the role of strategy, noting that the two-stop approach ultimately worked in Antonelli's favor.

This victory extends Antonelli's lead over Russell in the Drivers' Championship to 66 points, while Mercedes now sits 122 points ahead of Ferrari in the Constructors' standings. The result was a testament to Antonelli's skill and determination, leaving no doubt about his potential as a future star in Formula 1.
