Toto Wolff has firmly rejected allegations that Mercedes is favoring Kimi Antonelli over George Russell in the 2026 F1 season. He described these fan accusations as 'nonsensical' and lacking any basis.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has sharply criticized Formula 1 fans who suggest the team is giving preferential treatment to Kimi Antonelli over George Russell this season. Speaking during the team principals' press conference at the Singapore Grand Prix, Wolff unequivocally dismissed these claims, labeling them as 'completely nonsensical'.
The issue has become a hot topic among fans, especially after Russell suffered a mechanical failure in the Bahrain Grand Prix, which cost him a podium finish. Meanwhile, Antonelli secured second place in the same race, increasing his lead over Russell to 84 points in the championship standings. This has led some fans to theorize that Mercedes might be prioritizing Antonelli, who is having an impressive season in only his second year in Formula 1.
Wolff, however, finds these conspiracy theories absurd, stating, "They’re brainless, whoever thinks that. I mean, it’s completely nonsensical." He emphasized that Mercedes has always aimed to provide equal equipment to its drivers, and suggested that social media plays a role in spreading such unfounded rumors. "People hide behind their screens, and then they lash out; there’s a lot of polarization going on," he added.
The Austrian executive didn't hold back, humorously suggesting that those who believe in such theories might be better off watching children's shows instead of Formula 1. "I have zero understanding and respect for people who come up with these things," Wolff remarked.
The debate over whether Mercedes is favoring one driver has been further fueled by remarks from Russell himself, who hinted at a perceived bias towards Antonelli in the team's quest for the 2026 title. Despite these tensions, Wolff remains clear in his stance, dismissing any idea of internal favoritism within the team.
As the season progresses, it remains to be seen how the dynamics within Mercedes will play out, but for Wolff, the focus is on winning the constructors' championship and ensuring both drivers have the best possible support to perform at their peak.
