Toto Wolff on Mercedes' Bold Tyre Strategy for George Russell in Spain
Toto Wolff has defended Mercedes' decision to make two pit stops for George Russell during the Spanish Grand Prix. Despite questions from Russell, Wolff believes the strategy was sound.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has stood by the team's decision to call George Russell into the pits twice during the Spanish Grand Prix. While Russell questioned the move during the race, Wolff explained the strategy was designed to maximize performance under the circumstances.
Russell ended the race in fifth place after making two stops at the Madrid circuit. His first pit stop switched him to a set of medium tyres during the Virtual Safety Car period, and a second stop saw him change to hard tyres. Meanwhile, his teammate Kimi Antonelli opted for a one-stop strategy, a choice that ultimately led to his victory after Lando Norris's misfortune with VSC timing.
Russell pondered over the radio why the team decided on a two-stop strategy, suggesting he could have maintained a position ahead of Norris. "He [Russell] said the tyres were not in a great shape, the mediums, we didn't think that they would go to the end," Wolff explained. "The pit opportunity was not to hang out and wait for a red [flag] but to change the tyres and get on with it."
Reflecting on the race with _F1 TV_ post-race, Russell admitted that while he questioned the strategy in the moment, the hard tyre proved to be the better choice. "Maybe I could have stayed out with Leclerc, but I would have still finished behind him," he conceded, acknowledging the overtaking challenges posed by the track.
Additionally, Russell seemed to have tempered his expectations for the season, acknowledging that Antonelli's win extended his championship lead to 81 points. Nonetheless, Wolff remains optimistic about Russell's future. "You can have good races, bad races, good years, and bad years," Wolff noted. "We need to find out what it is for him to be able to unleash his potential."
