Toto Wolff Skeptical of Kimi Antonelli's Title Hopes in Austin

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff doubts Kimi Antonelli will clinch the championship at the United States GP, despite the possibility. Antonelli leads the standings, but Wolff emphasizes the unpredictability of racing.

Kimi Antonelli has a shot at sealing the F1 championship at the United States Grand Prix, but Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is not holding his breath. As Antonelli heads to the Circuit of The Americas, he could theoretically secure the title if everything falls perfectly into place.

Antonelli currently leads the drivers' championship with a substantial 102-point margin over teammate George Russell, with Lewis Hamilton trailing further behind. A win at Austin would bring Antonelli's total to 365 points, meaning Russell would need to finish at least eighth to keep his hopes alive, while Hamilton would need a fourth-place finish. A victory for Antonelli would also eliminate Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, and Lando Norris from contention.

Wolff, however, is cautious about counting on such a scenario. "I haven’t looked at it from that perspective," Wolff remarked, noting the unpredictability inherent in motor racing. "Mathematically, I haven’t checked the points, but it likely requires both George and Lewis to retire and for Kimi to win."

The possibility of Antonelli tying on points by season's end and still winning the title due to more victories adds another layer to the championship race. Yet, Wolff stresses that the focus should remain on scoring points and maintaining the lead rather than banking on others' misfortunes.

A potential twist could arise if the end-of-season calendar changes. While Qatar and Abu Dhabi remain on the schedule, the option to replace them with an event in Imola remains, should the situation in the Middle East demand it. Such a change would shrink the calendar, possibly affecting the championship outcome if Antonelli wins in Austin.

Wolff advises keeping focus on the immediate tasks, such as optimizing the car and performing well in qualifying, rather than fixating on the championship. "This is, for me, the best way in order to win a championship," Wolff explained.

Antonelli is on the brink of becoming the youngest world champion, surpassing Sebastian Vettel's record. His trajectory this season has been impressive, especially after a challenging rookie year. With eight wins under his belt, including a streak that began in China, Antonelli's maturity and confidence have been key to his success.

As the season progresses, Antonelli aims to maintain his form, focusing on each race's unique challenges rather than the potential glory awaiting him. Whether or not he clinches the title in Austin, his performance this year has been nothing short of remarkable.
