Max Verstappen finds Red Bull's ongoing radio communication issues perplexing, as both he and Isack Hadjar have encountered problems. Team principal Laurent Mekies admits the team is still in the dark about the cause.
Max Verstappen has expressed his bemusement at the persistent radio communication issues plaguing Red Bull, calling the situation "a bit weird." Both Verstappen and his teammate Isack Hadjar have experienced these technical gremlins, leaving the team scratching their heads in frustration. Even team principal Laurent Mekies concedes they haven't figured out the root of the problem.
At the United States Grand Prix, Verstappen encountered fresh radio difficulties, echoing the struggles from the Singapore Grand Prix where communication with the pit wall was less than optimal. Hadjar also confirmed a "poor radio" experience during the same race, admitting it was the first time this year he'd faced such challenges. "Honestly, for me, it’s the first time it’s happening the whole year," Hadjar noted, adding the confusion of almost pitting at the wrong time due to unclear instructions.
Mekies acknowledged the team's lack of understanding, saying, "If we were understanding it, we would have solved it." He conceded that other teams seem to have a handle on such issues, adding, "The competition is doing a better job than us because we can obviously hear everyone’s radio, and we have been struggling more than what we would have liked to."
Looking ahead to the Mexico Grand Prix, Verstappen mentioned that Austin was somewhat better, as "most" communications reached him successfully. Despite this slight improvement, the four-time world champion emphasized the urgency of resolving these radio issues. "It’s a bit weird that we’re struggling with it that much," Verstappen remarked, expressing his desire for a "normal working radio."
Red Bull enters the Mexico race tied with McLaren for P3 in the 2026 Constructors’ Championship standings. Verstappen, who has a strong record in Mexico with five wins, is also closing in on George Russell for second place in the Drivers’ Championship, trailing by just six points.
