George Russell’s championship hopes took another hit in Madrid, where his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli, clinched victory at the Spanish Grand Prix. As Russell lags behind, Toto Wolff is focused on harnessing the young Briton's evident potential.
Russell candidly shared his weekend woes, particularly with tyre degradation at the newly introduced circuit. These issues saw him miss out on a pole position battle and settle for sixth in qualifying. Mercedes opted for a two-stop strategy, switching Russell to medium tyres under the Virtual Safety Car before returning to hards. Initially skeptical, Russell later acknowledged that the strategy didn’t alter his end result of P5 significantly.
Despite finishing close to Charles Leclerc, Russell was nearly 30 seconds adrift of race winner Antonelli. This result widened the gap in the Drivers’ Championship, with Antonelli now 81 points ahead. Russell is left pondering how to close this gap in the remaining races.
Wolff expressed confidence in Russell’s abilities, citing his impressive track record: "You can see the pace he had towards the end when he was catching Leclerc. He was the fastest on track, but the pace vanished post-tyre changes. We need to analyze this because it’s clear the potential is there, both in him and the car."
Wolff continued, "We’re discussing a driver who’s won everything possible before entering Formula 1. He’s a top driver. We need to figure out how to unlock that potential, considering the psychological toll of a tough season. But the great ones recover, and George has what it takes to compete for championships."
With Antonelli extending his lead and rivals like Lewis Hamilton trailing even further after a race retirement, Mercedes finds itself in a relatively comfortable position for the remainder of the season. Despite this, Russell has essentially ruled himself out of the championship race, though Wolff remains optimistic that fortunes can change rapidly.
“It’s a mechanical sport,” Wolff remarked. “A DNF or crash can erase any comfortable lead. Until it’s mathematically impossible, we focus on each weekend, striving for our best performance. Development for 2027 has already begun, aligning with our long-term strategy, regardless of our current championship standing.”
