Adrian Newey Sheds Light on Lawrence Stroll's Honda Meeting

Adrian Newey confirmed that Aston Martin's Lawrence Stroll met with Honda in Japan during a scheduled meeting. The Aston Martin team principal sees promise in Honda's plans for F1 2027.

Adrian Newey, the Aston Martin team principal, has confirmed that Lawrence Stroll, the team owner, indeed traveled to Japan to meet with Honda at their Sakura base. This meeting, he clarified, was part of a routine schedule, with Newey himself joining remotely. He expressed optimism about Honda's plans for the 2027 F1 season.

The confirmation comes on the heels of a tough Singapore Grand Prix for Aston Martin, where Fernando Alonso faced power unit issues. Speculation about the meeting swirled online, but Newey downplayed its significance, explaining it as part of regular senior executive meetings that occur every few months. "It was one of those," he stated during the United States Grand Prix in Austin.

Aston Martin's collaboration with Honda in their first season has been challenging, with Alonso being the sole points scorer for the team so far in F1 2027. When asked about the balance between chassis and power unit deficits, Newey pointed to the ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) as a clear indicator. However, he emphasized that overall performance is a complex interplay of multiple factors beyond mere power output.

Looking ahead to 2027, Newey sees significant potential in Honda's ongoing projects, though he admits it's too early to predict where their power unit will stand at the beginning of the season. He also noted that any further developments would depend on the PUAC (Power Unit Advisory Committee).

Despite recent reliability issues, Newey praised the improving team spirit and collaboration between Aston Martin and Honda. "We’re making huge amounts of progress," he said, noting the lively atmosphere in the engineering offices. He remains confident in Honda's capabilities, given their historical achievements.

Reflecting on his past experience with Honda during their time with Red Bull, Newey acknowledged that Honda is currently trailing where they were with Red Bull in 2019. However, he remains optimistic, citing Honda's strong track record in overcoming challenges. "They’re a great company," he reaffirmed. "I have every confidence they will accelerate quickly and understand the problems of these particular PU regulations."
