Bottas Faces 50-Place Grid Penalty at Mexican GP

Valtteri Bottas will start from the back at the Mexican Grand Prix due to a 50-place grid penalty. The penalty arises from exceeding power unit component limits with his Cadillac team.

Valtteri Bottas will find himself at the back of the grid for the Mexican Grand Prix after incurring a hefty 50-place penalty for exceeding the season's limit on power unit components. This means Bottas will start from the rear in Mexico City, which isn't exactly the ideal spot for someone trying to cement their future with Cadillac.

While Sergio Perez has secured a multi-year contract with the team, Bottas' future remains a tad uncertain. Despite being the preferred choice to continue alongside Perez into 2027, Cadillac is keeping its options open. One such option, test driver Colton Herta, reached a milestone by earning the necessary points for his FIA Super Licence during FP1 in Mexico City.

Cadillac's struggles to move up the grid in recent races make Bottas' 50-place penalty all the more painful. The penalty stems from taking a fifth internal combustion engine and turbocharger, along with a fourth energy store, control electronics, and MGU-K for his Ferrari-powered Cadillac. In F1, every breach of component limits triggers a 10-place penalty, and Bottas has managed this five times, hence the grand total.

However, F1 regulations dictate that once a driver amasses 15 places of penalties, it's an automatic drop to the back of the grid. So, it's back of the pack for Bottas in Mexico.

On the Cadillac front, Sergio Perez had some thoughts on Herta's performance. "He is bringing good feedback to the team," said Perez, adding that Herta is starting to show more speed with increased time in the car and simulator. Still, Perez noted that the ultimate decision on the team lineup rests with team principal Marcin Budkowski.

Cadillac is still on the hunt for its first point in F1, with Bottas' P13 finish in China standing as their best result so far. Whether the Mexican GP will bring any improvement remains to be seen, especially with Bottas' penalty adding to the team's challenges.
