Liam Lawson's impressive performance at the Singapore Grand Prix has raised questions about Red Bull's future driver lineup. Martin Brundle suggests Red Bull might face a challenge in deciding whether to introduce a new driver or stick with their successful current roster.
Liam Lawson put on another stellar display at the Singapore Grand Prix, finishing seventh and leading the midfield pack. This performance has sparked a conversation about Racing Bulls' driver lineup, particularly in light of Martin Brundle's recent comments. With George Russell and Isack Hadjar starting from the back due to engine issues, Lawson seized the opportunity to score valuable points, ultimately finishing fifth after a dramatic sprint finish.
Racing Bulls team boss Alan Permane has been vocal about Formula 2 contender Nikola Tsolov being a potential candidate for a 2027 seat. Yet, Martin Brundle has cast doubt on the need for change, given the current success of the team’s drivers. "If Racing Bulls want to introduce a new young driver, they’ve got a major problem on their hands," Brundle remarked, praising Lawson's performance alongside teammates like Max Verstappen and Arvid Lindblad.
Lawson’s current standing in the points table is noteworthy. With 75 points, he trails teammate Isack Hadjar, who stands at 97, but surpasses the next-best midfield contender, Pierre Gasly, who has 41 points. Hadjar's absence from three races this season gave Lawson a chance to shine in the Red Bull car, a chance he has capitalized on.
Brundle pointed out that Racing Bulls have a "nice problem to have" with four competitive drivers, including Verstappen, Hadjar, Lawson, and Lindblad. Lawson's contribution has been crucial for Racing Bulls as they aim for their best-ever finish in the Constructors' Championship, currently pushing for fifth place.
Pre-race reports suggested Red Bull might defer the decision on Tsolov by making him a reserve driver. This aligns with insights from Ted Kravitz, who indicated that Racing Bulls might retain both Lawson and Lindblad for another season. Such a move would allow the team to continue benefiting from Lawson's impressive performances, which have significantly bolstered their standings this year.
