Sergio Perez's future with Cadillac is secure through 2029, but Valtteri Bottas's seat is far less certain. With Colton Herta and other talents in contention, Cadillac faces a pivotal decision for 2027.
Cadillac has firmly committed to Sergio Perez, extending his contract until at least 2029. However, the identity of his teammate for the 2027 season remains a significant question. As the current season unfolds, the focus turns to whether Valtteri Bottas will retain his seat or if an emerging talent like Colton Herta will step in.
The strategy behind Cadillac's current lineup, featuring seasoned drivers Perez and Bottas, was to leverage their extensive experience and reliability. Both drivers have a history of success, but this season has seen Perez outperform Bottas, reviving his career after a challenging stint at Red Bull. Meanwhile, Bottas has struggled to regain his form after a year on the sidelines.
Early in the season, rumors swirled that American driver Colton Herta might replace Bottas, though then-team boss Graeme Lowdon dismissed these as unfounded. Despite Lowdon's confidence in Bottas, the Finn has consistently trailed behind Perez, leading to increased scrutiny of his performance.
Following Lowdon's departure, Cadillac's evaluation of Bottas has intensified. The team's current inclination is to stick with Bottas, valuing his experience over the risks of introducing a rookie, which could impact the team's development budget under financial regulations. However, General Motors is reportedly keen on bringing Herta into the fold, citing his success in IndyCar with Andretti Global.
Herta's path to Formula 1 hinges on securing an FIA Super Licence, which he aims to achieve by participating in first practice at the Mexican Grand Prix. Completing the necessary 24 laps would earn him the licence required to compete in F1.
The pool of potential candidates doesn't end with Herta. Esteban Ocon and Yuki Tsunoda have also shown interest in the Cadillac seat, but neither is seen as a significant improvement over Bottas. Meanwhile, young talents like Alex Dunne and F3 Champion Ugo Ugochukwu are waiting in the wings. Ugochukwu has already met the Super Licence requirements and is expected to move to Formula 2 with Campos Racing, positioning him for a possible future role with Cadillac.
The decision for Cadillac boils down to whether they view the 2027 seat as a temporary solution until Ugochukwu is ready or if they're prepared to take a chance on Herta's potential. For now, Bottas's fate is still in his hands, but the team seems poised for an American talent to rise in the near future.
