Charles Leclerc Leads the Pack in First Practice at United States Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc set the fastest time in the opening practice session at the United States Grand Prix, edging out Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Ferrari and Red Bull showcased their competitiveness as teams gathered data under the Texas sun.

Charles Leclerc kicked off the United States Grand Prix weekend in style by setting the fastest lap during the first practice session at the Circuit of The Americas. The Ferrari driver led the charge ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and McLaren's Lando Norris.

Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli secured the fourth and fifth spots respectively, with Antonelli eyeing a potential maiden title this weekend. Meanwhile, Leclerc's teammate, Lewis Hamilton, clocked in at sixth.

The session began under sunny skies at 12:30 local time, with Alpine's Franco Colapinto first to venture onto the track. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto and Cadillac's Colton Herta, stepping in for Sergio Perez, equipped their cars with large aero rakes to gather crucial data.

Verstappen faced a minor hiccup, reporting a steering issue with "some kind of friction" when turning left. However, this didn't seem to slow down the four-time champion, who continued to push forward.

Leclerc initially set the pace with a lap just 0.074 seconds quicker than Hamilton on medium tires. Ferrari's recent upgrades appeared promising as the session progressed.

Russell, dealing with understeer issues, eventually found his rhythm, placing fifth on hard tires, right behind Antonelli who managed fourth on the same compound.

As the session reached halfway, drivers switched to soft tires for hot laps. Audi's Nico Hulkenberg was among the first, albeit with concerns about a peculiar noise from his power unit.

Leclerc further cemented his lead with a 1:36.052 on softs, while Hamilton struggled with track limits. Verstappen briefly topped the timesheets with a 1:35.862, but his lap was annulled for exceeding track limits at Turn 19, leaving him in second.

The session saw several drivers, including Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson, losing lap times to track limits, as they tested the boundaries of the circuit.

Williams had a slow start, focusing on data collection until Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon eventually posted lap times, albeit in the 19th and 20th positions respectively.

As the clock wound down, teams shifted focus to race simulations with higher fuel loads, leaving Leclerc at the top as the session concluded. Verstappen, Norris, Russell, Antonelli, and Hamilton rounded out the top six.

Oscar Piastri took seventh, while Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto impressed with an eighth-place finish, ahead of Racing Bulls drivers Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson.

Haas's Ollie Bearman was 11th, with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll in 12th and 13th. Red Bull's Hadjar, Alpine's Pierre Gasly, and others completed the field, with Albon having his only timed effort deleted.

With FP1 in the books, teams will now dive into their data before reconvening for Free Practice 2 at 16:00 local time.
