David Coulthard believes Charles Leclerc missed a chance to lead by not being aggressive enough against Max Verstappen at the Singapore Grand Prix. Despite a strong start, Leclerc was unable to overtake Verstappen, who maintained his lead throughout the race.
Charles Leclerc found himself unable to prevent Max Verstappen from securing a flawless victory at the Singapore Grand Prix. Verstappen had a momentary setback during the rain-affected Sprint when he lost the lead, but George Russell's crash helped him regain his position. Starting alongside Verstappen for the Grand Prix, Leclerc's launch seemed promising, yet it lacked the final punch to seize the lead.
David Coulthard, commenting for F1TV, pointed out that Leclerc's failure to capitalize on his strong start was due to a lack of boldness. "Both Jolyon and I are wondering how Verstappen held on," Coulthard remarked. "Leclerc did all the hard work off the line but somehow bottled it."
Leclerc himself hinted at this missed opportunity, suggesting in parc ferme that he could have been more aggressive at the start. Verstappen, meanwhile, admitted he left Leclerc minimal space at the apex, a testament to his competitive edge.
The Singapore circuit's challenging overtaking conditions meant that if Leclerc had managed to snatch the lead, Verstappen would have faced significant difficulty reclaiming it. This dynamic underlined the importance of the start, especially given Red Bull's formidable pace.
Despite the setback, Leclerc returned to the podium after a six-race absence and outperformed his Ferrari teammate, Lewis Hamilton, in the process. While Verstappen's victory saw him overtake Leclerc for fourth in the standings, Leclerc is now just 14 points adrift of Hamilton.
Ferrari had hoped the Singapore Grand Prix's corner-heavy layout would favor them, but Red Bull's performance proved otherwise. The race highlighted Red Bull's current dominance, leaving Ferrari with lessons to ponder for future encounters.
