Ferrari Reflects on Hamilton's Singapore Strategy Misstep

Lewis Hamilton's decision not to pit again during the Singapore Grand Prix was a clear misjudgment, according to Ferrari's Fred Vasseur. Despite the error, Vasseur emphasizes the importance of respecting a driver's perspective from the cockpit.

Lewis Hamilton's choice to stay out on track rather than pit again during the Singapore Grand Prix has sparked discussion within Ferrari and beyond. Team principal Fred Vasseur acknowledged the decision as a "clear mistake" but maintained that respecting a driver's in-cockpit insights is crucial. Martin Brundle, Sky F1 commentator, questioned how feasible it is for drivers like Hamilton to manage race strategy while driving.

Ferrari had opted for split strategies during the race. Charles Leclerc, along with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, started on soft tyres, while Hamilton was on mediums. This move didn't favor Hamilton, who eventually had to pit first among the frontrunners. After switching to softs, a two-stop strategy seemed likely, but Hamilton skipped a pit opportunity under a virtual safety car, missing the pit entry and continuing to the finish.

This decision saw him lose positions to Kimi Antonelli and McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, finishing sixth. Hamilton promptly apologized over the radio and later took responsibility for the error in media interviews. Ferrari, meanwhile, pointed to Hamilton's acknowledgment of the mistake to deflect blame.

Vasseur explained the dilemma: "While it was clearly a mistake, it highlights the tension between strategic calls and relying on driver feedback during the race. Drivers have a unique feel for the car that can't be ignored." Brundle echoed this sentiment in his analysis, stating that managing a team's strategy while driving is challenging. Despite the hiccup, Ferrari celebrated a podium finish with Leclerc securing second place.
