George Russell Discusses Dynamics with Kimi Antonelli in Challenging Season

George Russell reflects on his season alongside Kimi Antonelli, noting their amicable relationship despite Antonelli's stronger performance. Russell shares insights on his own struggles with consistency and his approach to improvement.

George Russell has opened up about the dynamics between him and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli during what has been an intriguing 2026 season for the pair. While Antonelli is on the brink of clinching his first championship title, Russell has found himself trailing by a significant margin, yet he insists their relationship remains unaffected.

Reflecting before the Mexico City Grand Prix, Russell acknowledged Antonelli's superior form this year. "Kimi is a great guy with lots of energy," remarked Russell. "Our relationship has stayed strong because there haven't been any major on-track incidents to spark rivalry." As Antonelli prepares to secure his title by finishing no worse than ninth, Russell remains philosophical about his own season, which has been marred by inconsistency.

Russell's 2026 campaign has seen a mix of highs and lows. A prime example was his impressive pole position and win in Baku, where he held off Max Verstappen. However, this was followed by less noteworthy results, including a retirement and two mid-field finishes. "I need to find consistency," Russell admitted. "I've never experienced such fluctuations in performance before. It's puzzling why my results have been so varied."

Despite these challenges, Russell is determined to focus on self-improvement. He's worked with a sports psychologist for years, which he credits for his past successes, and he remains committed to this approach despite this season's hurdles. "In racing, it’s about battling oneself, similar to a golfer," Russell explained. "I’m not fixated on beating Kimi directly. Instead, I’m focused on understanding what leads to my best performances and how to replicate those conditions more consistently."

Looking ahead to 2027, where both drivers will continue with Mercedes, Russell is introspective. "I’m focusing on what I can do to minimize poor performances," he said. "It's about looking in the mirror and figuring out how to replicate those moments of brilliance more often."

Russell's blend of self-awareness and determination hints at a driver who, while currently overshadowed by his teammate, is far from conceding defeat in the long term.
