Jenson Button Questions Esteban Ocon's Future in F1 After Haas Exit

Jenson Button expressed doubts about Esteban Ocon's future in Formula 1 after Haas dropped him for the Mexican Grand Prix. Despite Ocon's talent, Button questions if teams will be eager to sign him amid reported disagreements.

Esteban Ocon is facing an uncertain future in Formula 1, with Jenson Button suggesting his career could be in jeopardy after being dropped by Haas for the Mexican Grand Prix. Haas announced that their reserve driver, Ryo Hirakawa, would replace Ocon for the rest of the weekend, but provided little detail on the decision.

The team statement was succinct: “TGR Haas F1 Team reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the weekend’s Mexico City Grand Prix.” When pressed for details, team principal Ayao Komatsu told Sky Sports, “I can’t tell you much, but at least I can tell you that he’s not ill.”

Rumors from French publication L’Équipe suggest a heated exchange between Ocon and Komatsu, with whispers of a 'possible physical altercation.' Ocon, however, refuted these claims, stating on social media, “A difference in viewpoints led to a discussion with the parties involved... I categorically reject any reports or allegations suggesting that any form of physical violence was used.”

Button, the 2009 F1 world champion, shared his concerns on Sky Sports, noting the potential impact on Ocon's career. “We don’t know what happened behind closed doors,” he remarked, acknowledging the uncertainty. “It’s a tough one for a driver... he’s not going to be racing for the team in 2027. He has to look for other drives. So this little dispute, it hurts his career.”

Button praised Ocon’s speed but questioned his team compatibility, adding, “The speed is there with Esteban. But it’s out of the car that he’s let himself down.” Still, Button admitted the lack of full clarity on the situation makes it a bit unfair to judge entirely.

Jamie Chadwick, another pundit, echoed Button’s sentiments, suggesting it might indeed be the end of the F1 road for Ocon. “I’d be amazed if he’s back for the rest of the year, and then also in the future,” she said, noting the influx of young talent eager to make their mark in the sport.

While Ocon’s driving skills are not in question, this latest incident could weigh heavily on his prospects in the F1 paddock. As the sport evolves, teams may be more inclined to place their bets on emerging talents who can blend speed with teamwork.
