Kimi Antonelli showcased his racing prowess with a decisive win at the United States Grand Prix, finishing ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. This victory edges Antonelli closer to the Drivers' Championship title.
Kimi Antonelli delivered a masterclass at the United States Grand Prix, leading the field with impeccable strategy and racecraft. Despite the fact that this victory didn't immediately secure him the Drivers' Championship, it certainly put him within arm's reach. The Italian driver skillfully maintained his lead from pole position, executing a successful one-stop strategy that saw him finish 13.078 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen rounded out the podium for Red Bull, despite battling car issues throughout the race.
Antonelli's win was set up by a stellar opening lap where he capitalized on Verstappen's lackluster start. Holding the lead, he executed a longer stint on medium tires before switching to the hard compound, expertly managing them to the finish line. His ninth win of the season was secured despite a late Virtual Safety Car that briefly bunched up the field.
Charles Leclerc managed to snatch second place with a late-race overtake, making it two consecutive P2 finishes. Verstappen, meanwhile, had to fend off multiple technical hiccups but still managed to secure the third spot on the podium. Lewis Hamilton contributed to Ferrari's points tally with a fourth-place finish, while Lando Norris, who had been in podium contention, fell back to fifth due to tire degradation.
The race saw its fair share of drama, with George Russell finishing eighth and Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly rounding out the top ten. Nico Hulkenberg, Arvid Lindblad, and Gabriel Bortoleto were just outside the points, the latter recovering from an 80-place grid penalty. Haas and Williams both left Austin empty-handed, continuing their struggles this season.
Retirements included Franco Colapinto, Ollie Bearman, and Valtteri Bottas, whose car caused the Virtual Safety Car. Despite these setbacks, the race was a testament to Antonelli's championship potential, as he now stands on the verge of clinching his first title.
The race weekend also saw various strategic decisions come into play. Ferrari had shown strong pace in practice, but Antonelli's 'miracle lap' in qualifying set the tone. The tire strategy was a mixed bag, with Mercedes and McLaren starting on mediums, while the rest of the top ten, including Red Bull, opted for softs. The choice of compounds played a crucial role, as Antonelli's long stint on mediums gave him a strategic edge.
As the paddock now shifts its focus to the Mexico City Grand Prix, Antonelli's victory in Austin serves as a pivotal moment in the 2026 season, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the championship battle.
