Kimi Antonelli secured a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix, but celebrations for the world championship must wait. Despite the win, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell's performances mean the title race heads to Mexico.
Kimi Antonelli delivered a masterclass at the United States Grand Prix, crossing the finish line first, yet his championship celebrations are on hold. Despite the win in Austin, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell did just enough to ensure the title race continues to Mexico. The podium was rounded out by Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen, who both put in strong performances. The Circuit of the Americas presented Antonelli with his first chance to clinch the 2026 F1 World Championship. Starting from pole, Antonelli needed George Russell to finish ninth or lower, and Lewis Hamilton no higher than fifth, to seal the deal. Antonelli opted for the C3 medium tyres, while Max Verstappen, lining up beside him, chose the C4 softs, adding an edge to the start. At lights out, Antonelli took off with a perfect start, while Charles Leclerc managed to outpace both Red Bulls. Hamilton had a close encounter with Verstappen but wisely held back. Further down, Carlos Sainz narrowly avoided the wall in a tussle with Arvid Lindblad's Racing Bulls. Russell, meanwhile, found himself under investigation for potentially gaining an advantage outside the track limits. By the end of the first lap, Antonelli had opened a 2.5-second lead over Verstappen, who quickly regained second place. A brief Virtual Safety Car was called to clear debris after a clash between Alex Albon and Fernando Alonso. The race settled down, though Lando Norris felt held up by teammate Oscar Piastri, prompting McLaren to orchestrate a swap. Russell received a five-second penalty for his earlier antics. Meanwhile, Esteban Ocon requested a swap with Haas teammate Oliver Bearman, which was duly executed. Hamilton reported struggles with his car's handling, particularly in slow corners, and was unable to close the gap to Leclerc. Verstappen, dissatisfied with his car's upshifts, was the first to pit, switching to fresh softs. Hamilton followed suit with a stop for new mediums, finding himself behind Liam Lawson's Racing Bulls. Verstappen soon overtook Piastri, while Leclerc retained his position over Hamilton after pitting. Both Ferraris were on mediums, while the McLaren duo opted for hards. Isack Hadjar, in second, stayed out on his softs longer than expected. Antonelli hoped Russell could hold off Verstappen, but the Dutchman swiftly moved past him. Bearman's day worsened with a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Pierre Gasly. Russell served his penalty and switched to hard tyres, while Antonelli committed to a one-stop strategy, also opting for hard tyres. Hadjar held up Leclerc for Verstappen's benefit before pitting and surprisingly switching to hards. Red Bull faced issues, with Verstappen dealing with engine braking problems and Hadjar encountering throttle mapping trouble. Bearman eventually retired his Haas after his penalty. Verstappen pitted again for mediums, allowing Leclerc to take the lead briefly before Antonelli reclaimed it with a decisive move at Turn 12. Verstappen had to close a nearly 20-second gap to challenge Antonelli but struggled with a wide moment at Turn 12. Franco Colapinto retired his Alpine, while Hamilton made his second stop for new hards, emerging between Hadjar and Piastri in sixth. Leclerc also switched to hards, joining the hunt for Antonelli. Hamilton passed Hadjar to move into fourth, keeping Ferrari in contention for a double podium. Verstappen, aware of Leclerc's pressure, passed Norris, with Leclerc following suit. Despite his efforts, Verstappen couldn't shake off Leclerc, who eventually overtook him at Turn 12. Hamilton continued his charge, overtaking Norris to snatch fourth, keeping his faint title hopes alive. A Virtual Safety Car was deployed as Valtteri Bottas retired his Cadillac, but the race resumed with Antonelli maintaining a comfortable lead. Ultimately, Antonelli drove to a flawless victory, though the title remains undecided until Mexico, where he is poised to secure it.
