Liam Lawson delivered a strong performance at the Singapore Grand Prix, securing seventh place and highlighting his potential for Racing Bulls’ 2027 driver line-up. As the team considers its future driver pairings, Lawson's showing bolsters his case.
Liam Lawson left the Singapore Grand Prix with a grin, having delivered a performance that did wonders for his prospects with Racing Bulls. The New Zealander drove to a commendable seventh place at Marina Bay, a timely boost as the team contemplates its driver line-up for the 2027 season.
In the race to secure one of the coveted Racing Bulls seats for 2027, Lawson is up against Arvid Lindblad and Nikola Tsolov. His recent showing certainly didn't hurt his chances. After finishing fifth in the Sprint, Lawson continued to impress in the main event, moving up from his eighth-place start to finish seventh.
Reflecting on the race, Lawson remarked, "The target was to get it off the line, and we managed that." Starting on soft tires, he found himself with ample grip, even closing in on a McLaren early on. "I didn’t really want to attack, but everyone was bunching up," he noted, adding that the car performed well in all conditions.
While Lawson was pleased with his car's performance, his teammate Lindblad had a rougher time. He struggled with power unit issues, describing difficulties with engine braking and being overtaken on the straights. Lawson, however, reported no such trouble, though he admitted the power units are "weird" and posed challenges early in the race due to a lack of long runs in practice.
Lawson's strong finish in Singapore contrasts sharply with Lindblad's point-less weekend. His 75-point tally places him ninth in the Drivers' Championship, a comfortable 34 points clear of Alpine's Pierre Gasly.
Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane confirmed that the decision on the 2027 driver line-up would be made soon. With a free weekend ahead, the team will have time to reflect before the season picks back up at the Circuit of The Americas for the United States Grand Prix.
Lawson's recent form certainly gives Racing Bulls something to ponder as they mull over who will represent them in the coming season.
