Max Verstappen and Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies held differing views on whether Verstappen could have held off Lewis Hamilton without the Virtual Safety Car intervention at the United States Grand Prix. Hamilton, meanwhile, chose not to engage in the debate, citing earlier race setbacks as more significant.
A late Virtual Safety Car (VSC) at the United States Grand Prix threw a wrench into what could have been a thrilling showdown between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. With just five laps remaining, Hamilton was closing in on Verstappen at a rapid pace, suggesting a tight finish was imminent. However, Valtteri Bottas’s retirement from the race triggered the VSC, allowing Verstappen to secure a podium position without further challenge.
In the aftermath, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies was optimistic about Verstappen's chances, stating that his driver might have kept Hamilton at bay even without the VSC. Mekies speculated, "I think Max would have kept Lewis. He was faster than us in that phase, but I think he had a fairly reasonable gap to him. So I think he would have kept him behind him, even with all the VSC, but you know, it’s only speculation."
Verstappen, however, had a different take. During a conversation with ViaPlay, he acknowledged that the VSC played a crucial role in his podium finish, remarking, "Absolutely, that’s clear. Yeah because Lewis was rapidly approaching." Despite the potential implications, Verstappen seemed unfazed by the difference between finishing third or fourth.
Meanwhile, Hamilton chose not to dive into the speculative waters about what could have been. Speaking to Sky Sports, he pointed out that his race was compromised in the early stages, saying, "To be honest, the VSC wasn’t ideal but I felt like the race was really lost from the first two stints. I lost so much time. I couldn’t turn the car in the lower speed particularly." Hamilton crossed the finish line just 1.1 seconds behind Verstappen, having lost valuable time during the VSC.
The United States Grand Prix might not have concluded with the wheel-to-wheel battle fans hoped for, but it certainly sparked a lively debate within Red Bull and left Hamilton reflecting on what might have been.
