Max Verstappen Criticizes Red Bull's 'Horrendous' Start Issues Despite Winning Singapore Sprint

Max Verstappen clinched his first victory at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in the Singapore Grand Prix Sprint, yet voiced frustration over persistent start issues with his Red Bull car. Despite benefitting from George Russell's early exit, Verstappen emphasized the need to resolve these problems for the main race.

Max Verstappen may have added a Singapore Grand Prix Sprint win to his resume, but not without a rather public airing of grievances about his Red Bull car's performance at the start. Even after claiming pole position in the Sprint Qualifying, Verstappen found himself outpaced by George Russell at the onset—a déjà vu moment from the previous week's race at Sepang.

Russell's early crash into the pit wall handed Verstappen the lead, which he maintained, finishing over two seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Speaking to David Coulthard post-race, Verstappen didn't hold back. "The start was horrendous again," he lamented. "If we have something like that tomorrow, that’s your race over, if nothing crazy happens."

The Sprint was delayed due to an unexpected downpour, which caught many off guard, most notably Russell, who paid the price. Verstappen acknowledged his luck in the aftermath of Russell's misfortune but highlighted the challenges of overtaking in such conditions. "I was a bit lucky with what happened with George at the last corner, and after that, we just wanted to keep it calm and under control," he said. "Especially in conditions like this, with the intermediates."

For Verstappen, the Sprint win is a milestone, marking his first victory at Marina Bay, but he downplayed its significance. "I want to win tomorrow," he stated, emphasizing the importance of a full Grand Prix victory. "It will be very close with a lot of cars. We just need to try and make sure we are the best one out of them."

As the main race looms, Verstappen's comments serve as a candid reminder that, even at the top, there's always room for improvement. The Dutchman may have conquered the Sprint, but his eyes are firmly set on Sunday's ultimate prize.
