Max Verstappen Stands by Teammate Chris Lulham Amid Online Backlash

Max Verstappen has expressed strong disapproval of online abuse directed at his endurance racing teammate Chris Lulham following a penalty at Portimao. Verstappen emphasized the need to focus on the positives and condemned personal attacks in racing.

Max Verstappen isn't one to mince words, especially when it comes to defending a teammate. Recently, he took to social media to express his disdain for those who have targeted his endurance racing colleague, Chris Lulham, with online abuse. Lulham was at the center of controversy after a driving error in the GT World Challenge Europe race at Portimao. The incident resulted in a spin and a drive-through penalty, derailing Verstappen Racing's chances of a podium finish.

Verstappen, who was part of the team lineup alongside Lulham and Ben Barnicoat, shared his thoughts online, condemning the wave of negativity. "Exciting weekend!" his post started, noting the ups and downs of the race. He then addressed the backlash Lulham faced, stating, "Everyone can have their opinions about what happened on track, but these personal attacks are not okay." Verstappen praised Lulham's strong stint and reminded fans that mistakes are part of racing.

The incident saw the Verstappen Racing team drop to 24th place before Verstappen's final stint elevated them to ninth. Despite the setback, Verstappen made it clear that such errors don't warrant personal attacks. "There’s no place for this kind of abuse in our sport or anywhere else," he asserted.

Verstappen himself is no stranger to online vitriol, having faced criticism throughout his career. When asked if more should be done to tackle this issue, he wasn't surprised by the behavior but pointed out the role of social media platforms in enabling it. He expressed his indifference to abuse directed at him but was more concerned for his younger teammate, who might not be accustomed to such scrutiny.

Reflecting on the race itself, Verstappen enjoyed the opportunity to compete in the endurance world, having previously participated in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Despite the penalty setback, he found the experience rewarding. "We were quick, and that’s, at the end of the day, what is, for me, most important: to see that you are competitive," he said.

As Verstappen heads into the United States Grand Prix, he's riding high from recent victories. However, he's cautious about the challenges ahead, particularly with teams introducing upgrades and the notoriously bumpy Circuit of the Americas. "I’m sure that tomorrow is going to be quite tough to find the right compromises around this track," Verstappen noted, highlighting the physical demands of racing on such surfaces.

In summary, Verstappen's recent experience in endurance racing has been a blend of competitive spirit and the harsh realities of public scrutiny. His willingness to defend his teammate reflects a broader call for respect and civility in the sport.
