McLaren Targets Braking and Future Development with Upgrades at US GP

McLaren is introducing upgrades at the United States Grand Prix to enhance performance and braking reliability. These changes are also a testbed for concepts in next year's car.

McLaren is set to roll out upgrades at the United States Grand Prix, aiming not just for immediate performance improvements but also focusing on long-term developments. Central to these updates is the enhancement of braking reliability, alongside new floor components designed to test concepts that will carry over into the 2027 car. With the season entering its final stretch, McLaren finds itself challenged by Ferrari and overtaken by Red Bull on track, leaving them in a tight battle for championship standings.

Currently, McLaren holds 339 points, trailing Ferrari by 105, while Red Bull, invigorated by Max Verstappen's back-to-back wins, is just seven points behind. Team principal Andrea Stella has outlined plans for continued updates to the MCL40, hoping these will narrow the gap to the frontrunners and allow McLaren to challenge for podiums and potential victories in the closing races.

Stella emphasized the dual purpose of these upgrades: "We hope they will fill the gap to the best cars and enable McLaren to fight for podiums on merit, and then victory. However, we also want to test some fundamental concepts for next year’s car." At this stage in the development cycle, the team is keen to push the boundaries of aerodynamic innovation, recognizing the complexity that comes after two years of development.

Rob Marshall, McLaren's chief technical officer, confirmed that the first wave of new parts will debut at the Austin circuit. "We’re bringing a modest selection of upgrades for this event," he noted, "aimed at improving some braking reliability and performance issues." In addition to these, the team will test small floor changes as part of their ongoing development strategy. Marshall acknowledges the unpredictability of recent races, noting that various factors, including car upgrades and driver preferences, have influenced performance.

Despite recent challenges, McLaren remains optimistic about their prospects in Austin, a track they believe suits their car better. As the season winds down, the team is determined to regain momentum and secure a strong finish.
