Nikola Tsolov Takes First F1 Test with Racing Bulls at Imola
F2 leader Nikola Tsolov has successfully completed his first Formula 1 test with Racing Bulls at the iconic Imola circuit. The 19-year-old covered 690 kilometers, marking a significant step in his racing journey.
Formula 2 frontrunner Nikola Tsolov has officially stepped into the world of Formula 1, completing his first test with Racing Bulls at Italy's renowned Imola circuit. This opportunity, part of a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) program, allowed the Red Bull junior to log an impressive 690 kilometers on the track. At just 19 years old, Tsolov is continuing his development under the watchful eye of the Red Bull Junior Programme.
Reflecting on his experience, Tsolov expressed his excitement: "First TPC day in a Formula 1 car done, and I’m super happy with how today went. I really enjoyed every lap and it’s difficult to put into words what it means to finally get this opportunity." Grateful for the chance, he added, "A massive thank you to VCARB and the Red Bull Junior Team for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. It’s something I’ve been working towards my whole life."
Alan Permane, Racing Bulls' Team Principal, was equally optimistic about Tsolov's performance. "Today was a really positive step for Nikola. He adapted quickly to the car and showed the composure you want to see from a driver taking on an F1 car for the first time," Permane noted. The test is part of the team's ongoing strategy to nurture its junior drivers, providing them with the necessary tools and environment to thrive.
Currently leading the F2 standings by a 20-point margin over Gabriele Mini, Tsolov's name has been floated in discussions about Racing Bulls' 2027 F1 lineup. However, when asked about this in July, Permane was noncommittal: "It’s not an untruth to say we’re not thinking about it at the moment. He’s there, he’s doing his job, we're doing our job, and we'll make a call if and when he comes up to Racing Bulls later this year."
For now, Tsolov's primary focus remains on the F2 championship, with the next round taking place at Monza. As he continues his ascent in motorsport, this test at Imola stands as a notable milestone in his burgeoning career.
