Oscar Piastri Eyes Wins in McLaren's Push to Reclaim Form

Oscar Piastri has outlined his ambitions for the rest of 2026, aiming to regularly compete for victories with McLaren. The Australian driver is buoyed by the team's historical ability to quickly claw back competitiveness.

The season has been a mixed bag for Piastri. Following a strong 2025 campaign where he contended for the Drivers' Championship, 2026 began on a sour note with DNFs in Australia and China. However, podium finishes in Japan and Miami hinted at potential, though the subsequent races saw him slip out of the top three and even the points.

In Hungary, Piastri briefly led the race after overtaking teammate Lando Norris, only to retire due to a gearbox issue after tangling with Carlos Sainz in a Williams. Meanwhile, Norris went on to secure McLaren's first win of the year.

When asked about his goals for the remaining races, Piastri emphasized learning and improving, aiming to capitalize on any opportunity to challenge for wins. "If we can start challenging for wins, then we can start thinking about what we can achieve in the Championship," he noted. However, he stressed the importance of maximizing the car's performance each weekend as a prerequisite for success.

Despite McLaren's double title triumph in 2025, the team has struggled under new regulations, lagging behind Mercedes by eight-tenths at the season's start. Yet, McLaren has a knack for upgrades and consistent point-scoring, as seen in 2024 when they transformed their season in Miami, sparking a resurgence that led to their first Constructors' title since 1998.

Piastri remains optimistic about McLaren's prospects, citing the team's past resilience. "We're aware of where we sit," he said. "We've got good ideas on how we can improve, and everyone is eager to get back to winning ways."

The Australian is confident in the team's ability to adapt, drawing on past experiences of bouncing back. "We've made that step before, and I'm confident we can do it again," he asserted, highlighting the team's collaborative spirit and strategic approach as key strengths.

Currently third in the Constructors' standings with 220 points, McLaren has its work cut out for them. But if history is any guide, they're not one to be counted out just yet.
