McLaren's Oscar Piastri received a 10-second penalty after a collision with Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad at the Mexican Grand Prix. The incident saw Lindblad end up in the barriers, though he was unhurt.
Oscar Piastri's race at the Mexican Grand Prix took a turn for the worse after the FIA handed him a 10-second time penalty. The penalty was issued following an investigation into a collision with Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad. As the cars barreled through Turn 1 on Lap 59, Piastri's McLaren nudged Lindblad's vehicle, lifting its rear wheels off the track and sending it into the Turn 2 barriers. Fortunately, Lindblad emerged unscathed from the incident.
The penalty, applied post-race, demoted Piastri from a seventh-place finish to 15th, stripping him of any points from the race. Piastri argued he had no escape route during the incident, while Lindblad was understandably reticent, having not yet reviewed the footage. "Not much to say," Lindblad commented, noting that he had been in a genuine battle for position with Piastri, who had been trailing him for over ten laps.
The stewards, however, found that Piastri could have avoided the collision by moving further left after Turn 1, even if it meant going off the track before Turn 2. Their decision was based on data, video evidence, and discussions with both drivers and their teams. "Car 81 was never fully alongside Car 41, so was not able to claim the right to the corner," the stewards stated, explaining that Lindblad had left sufficient racing room.
Former world champion and current pundit Nico Rosberg weighed in on the incident, agreeing with the stewards' decision. "He needs to back out," Rosberg said, pointing out that Lindblad was entitled to use the entire width of the track.
In the grand scheme, this penalty adds another layer to the conversation surrounding the Mexican GP, which also witnessed other notable events like Antonelli's championship win and a clash between Hamilton and Leclerc. Piastri will no doubt be hoping for a smoother race weekend next time out.
