Pierre Waché Discusses the Evolution of Red Bull's RB22 into a Race Winner

Pierre Waché, Red Bull's technical director, shares insights into the development of the RB22, which transformed from an underperformer to a race winner. Despite recent victories, Waché remains focused on the team's ongoing challenges and future goals.

Red Bull's RB22 has undergone a significant transformation, evolving from a car that was initially off the pace to a formidable race winner. Pierre Waché, the technical director at Red Bull, has shed light on how the team managed this turnaround. Initially, the season began with Red Bull trailing the frontrunners by about 1.5 seconds. However, through dedicated development efforts, the team has made impressive strides forward.

Last year's RB21 saw sustained development, which helped Red Bull refine its tools and processes. Despite starting this season as one of the slower teams among the top four, the RB22 has made remarkable progress, particularly after an upgrade in Miami addressed some early-season handling issues. Further performance upgrades in Austria and Baku allowed Red Bull to close the gap to Mercedes, with Max Verstappen showing competitive pace.

Verstappen's recent wins in Malaysia and Singapore have brought a renewed sense of optimism to the team after a challenging period marked by leadership changes and the absence of Adrian Newey's technical influence. Waché, who has taken the helm of the technical team, appears more relaxed and confident as he discussed the RB22's journey.

"We've managed to steer the car in the right direction," Waché said. However, he admitted to feeling frustrated that Red Bull has not yet reached its championship-winning potential. The team has faced challenges, including steering and weight issues, but has worked diligently to overcome them.

Waché highlighted the importance of the engine's integration into the car's overall design, a new challenge as Red Bull Powertrains takes on the role of engine constructor. Despite the hurdles, the team has learned valuable lessons that will strengthen their future efforts.

While Red Bull has made significant progress with the RB22, Waché remains focused on the work still to be done. He credits the team's collective effort and emphasizes that success is not solely dependent on one person, even as he steps out from Newey's shadow. Red Bull's journey with the RB22 reflects the persistent engineering mindset that sees opportunities for improvement even amidst success.
