Rafael Camara Earns 2027 Haas F1 Seat After Intense Evaluation

Rafael Camara has secured a race seat with Haas for 2027, following a rigorous evaluation process at Portimao. The young Ferrari junior impressed the team with his adaptability and composure under pressure.

Rafael Camara has emerged as the latest addition to the Haas Formula 1 team, securing a seat for the 2027 season after a demanding evaluation process. Camara was among four drivers put through their paces by Haas, including team reserves Ryo Hirakawa and Jack Doohan, along with McLaren junior Leonardo Fornaroli. Ultimately, it was Camara, the current leader in the Formula 2 championship, who clinched the coveted spot.

Reflecting on the two-day evaluation at Portimao, Camara described the experience as "very intense." Despite the pressure of driving a new car on an unfamiliar track with a team he had just joined, Camara focused on learning quickly and delivering his best performance. "It was a very intense two days," he recounted. "You knew that it was going to be important, the test, and you need to deliver in a way."

Team principal Ayao Komatsu noted that Camara demonstrated more than just raw speed during the test, making him a standout candidate. With Ollie Bearman expected to retain the second Haas seat, Camara's arrival marks a significant step in his career, as he looks to transition from a successful junior career into the F1 ranks.

Camara expressed surprise and joy when he received the call confirming his seat. "I got a call off Ayao in Milan, and then the first thing I said to him was, 'Are you sure?'", he recalled with a laugh. His excitement was shared with his family, who have supported his journey into motorsport despite not coming from that world.

As he prepares to join the F1 grid, Camara will be sporting the race number 50, as his preferred number 5 was already taken by fellow Brazilian and Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto. Camara's path to Formula 1 has been a testament to perseverance and talent, and he now looks forward to making the most of this opportunity with Haas.
