Rafael Camara is set to join Haas in 2027 after an impressive shoot-out test. The Brazilian driver shares his journey and excitement about stepping into Formula 1.
Rafael Camara, an emerging talent in the motorsport world, is on the verge of fulfilling his lifelong dream. The 21-year-old Brazilian driver, currently leading the F2 championship, has been announced as Haas' new recruit for the 2027 season. Camara's journey to this milestone has been marked by determination and skill, qualities that were on full display during a rigorous shoot-out test with Haas.
Meeting in a Central London hotel, Camara spoke candidly about the momentous occasion. "It's really crazy to achieve this," he shared, still coming to terms with the reality of joining the F1 grid. His drive and focus were evident throughout his campaign, where he aimed to make his mark in F2 with Invicta Racing, hoping to catch the eye of the Formula 1 bigwigs.
The young driver's association with Ferrari's junior programme since 2021 set the stage for his ascent. He knew that a strong performance in F2 could open doors to the top tier of motorsport. Despite a challenging season where he once trailed the leader by 47 points, Camara's resolve never wavered. "I just wanted to make sure I did everything I could," he reflected, emphasizing his desire to have no regrets.
His persistence paid off when he was invited to a private test at the Hungaroring in May. This was followed by an intense shoot-out test with Haas, where team boss Ayao Komatsu evaluated several young prospects to replace Esteban Ocon. Camara's ability to adapt quickly to new conditions and extract maximum performance caught the team's attention.
During those two critical days, Camara had to acclimate to a new environment rapidly. "It was quite intense," he admitted. "I just wanted to make sure I was enjoying it because it was not an opportunity I would have again." His efforts were rewarded, as his lap times in varying conditions impressed Komatsu and his engineering team.
Drawing on his experience from his F3 debut in Melbourne, where he quickly mastered an unfamiliar track, Camara has consistently shown his knack for pushing boundaries. Reflecting on his journey, he credits the Ferrari junior programme for his growth, both as a driver and a person. "I was a bit scared at first," he confessed, but the challenges only spurred him to improve.
Inspired by the paths of Charles Leclerc and Ollie Bearman, Camara was determined to follow in their footsteps. When Komatsu finally gave him the nod, Camara's first call was to his parents. "My dad was more emotional," he laughed, recalling the moment.
Looking ahead, Camara is focused on closing out the F2 season on a high note. He leads Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov by seven points, with two rounds remaining. Should he maintain his lead, Camara will join the ranks of those who have won both F3 and F2 titles back-to-back before stepping up to F1.
As he prepares for his debut with Haas, Camara is ready for the challenges ahead. "There's a lot to speak about and organise," he stated, eager to dive into the upcoming Haas project and the end-of-season young driver test. With an intense winter ahead, Camara is poised to make his mark on the Formula 1 world.
