Sebastian Wheldon Joins Trident for 2027 Formula 3 Season

Sebastian Wheldon, a promising young American talent, has secured a coveted spot with Trident for the 2027 Formula 3 season. This move marks a significant step in his burgeoning racing career as he follows in the footsteps of his late father, IndyCar legend Dan Wheldon.

Trident has announced that Sebastian Wheldon, a rising star from St. Petersburg, Florida, will join their ranks for the 2027 Formula 3 season. The 17-year-old, part of the Andretti Global driver development program, is set to take one of the most sought-after seats in F3, marking a pivotal moment in his young career.

Sebastian Wheldon Steps Up to Formula 3

Wheldon, son of the late IndyCar legend Dan Wheldon, will be part of Trident's trio of drivers for the upcoming season. Trident has a formidable reputation, having produced several F3 champions, including Gabriel Bortoleto, Leonardo Fornaroli, and Rafael Camara.

In his response to the announcement, Wheldon expressed his excitement: "I’m thrilled to be racing in the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship with Trident Motorsport. Racing for such a successful team brings pressure, but I embrace challenges and am eager to achieve strong results. I am thankful to TWG Motorsports and Andretti Global for their support."

Giacomo Ricci, Trident's team manager, added: "We are pleased to bring Sebastian on board for the 2027 season. His consistent growth and performance, especially his second-place finish in the 2026 Formula Regional season, have shown he is a talented competitor. We believe Trident is the perfect place for him to continue his development."

Wheldon began his journey in single-seaters in 2023 after winning the Skip Barber Formula Race Series. His European adventure started in 2025 with Prema, where he secured six wins in the Italian Formula 4 Championship, finishing third overall. In the same year, he also became a race winner in the E4 Championship.

In 2026, Wheldon advanced to Formula Regional, capturing four wins and eight podiums, ultimately finishing second in the European Championship, narrowly missing the title by nine points to Emanuele Olivieri.

Wheldon's promotion to Formula 3 coincides with a vibrant period for American motorsport. Ugo Ugochukwu, another American driver, recently clinched the 2026 Formula 3 title and is expected to move up to Formula 2. Meanwhile, Cadillac F1 test driver Colton Herta has had a challenging year in Formula 2, leaving his future plans for 2027 open-ended.
