Verstappen Secures Sprint Pole for Singapore GP, Russell Lines Up Second

Max Verstappen clinched the Sprint pole position in Singapore, edging out George Russell. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli could only manage seventh, adding intrigue to the upcoming Sprint race.

The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix served up another intriguing Sprint Qualifying session, with Max Verstappen seizing pole position. The Red Bull driver managed to edge out Mercedes' George Russell by a mere 0.120 seconds, setting the stage for what could be a gripping Sprint race.

Verstappen's pole position wasn't entirely free of controversy, as the Dutchman is set for a visit to the stewards. An alleged yellow flag infringement involving an overtake on Lewis Hamilton during SQ1 is under review. The yellow flags had been waved due to Sergio Perez's casual encounter with the barriers, which left a bit of his front wing on the track.

Meanwhile, championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes found himself languishing in seventh. The Italian admitted to struggling with the car's unpredictability and expressed concerns about the weekend ahead: "I came with high hopes... But I think it will be a difficult weekend. I don't really see where we can find seven tenths."

The session saw some notable eliminations, with Arvid Lindblad, Lance Stroll, Alex Albon, Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, and Carlos Sainz exiting in SQ1. SQ2 claimed Franco Colapinto, Nico Hulkenberg, Oliver Bearman, Gabriel Bortoleto, Fernando Alonso, and Esteban Ocon.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc will share the second row with Oscar Piastri from McLaren, after Leclerc managed a late improvement. Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton occupy the third row. Despite Hamilton giving it his all, a slight misstep in the final sector kept him from matching his teammate Russell.

This being the final Sprint weekend of the year, the tally for Sprint poles stands with Russell claiming three, while Norris, Hamilton, and Verstappen each secured one. Victory-wise, Russell leads with three wins, followed by Norris and Antonelli with one each. Verstappen will aim to add his name to that list in the upcoming Sprint.

With the Sprint scheduled to start at 17:00 local time, 09:00 UTC, it promises to be a fascinating affair. The teams are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to gather more data, which could make for a more competitive Qualifying session for the Grand Prix itself.

As Russell pointed out, the grip on the pole side offers a significant advantage, and Verstappen is well-placed to capitalize on it. However, with points on offer for the top eight finishers in the 21-lap dash, the battle promises to be anything but straightforward.

Verstappen reflected on the challenge of Singapore: "The last few races we have been a lot stronger, but this track still highlights a few weaknesses in the car... It is like a sauna, trying to do some exercise in it. The whole cockpit is hot, your feet, your body, your head. It is never comfortable, that is what is unique about this place and we love it."

As the dust settles on Sprint Qualifying, all eyes are now on the Sprint race, where drivers will be pushing the limits in the sweltering conditions of Marina Bay. Will Verstappen convert his pole into a win, or will Russell and others spoil the party?
