Andrea Stella Applauds McLaren Duo's Conduct in Hungarian GP

Lando Norris finally broke through to claim his first Grand Prix win of the 2026 season at the Hungarian GP, but not without a spirited contest with his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri. Andrea Stella, McLaren's Team Principal, commended both drivers for their respectful approach throughout the race.

Norris, the reigning World Champion, initially lost the lead to Piastri early on after a wide turn. However, the race dynamics shifted with pit strategies and a bit of luck. Piastri's lead after the first pit stop was short-lived as he encountered traffic and a minor skirmish with Carlos Sainz's Williams, prompting an irritated radio message about the strategy.

Despite his frustration, Piastri's challenge ended with a suspected gearbox failure, allowing Norris to capitalize and secure the victory. Stella noted that Piastri later apologized for his heated comments, and emphasized the fairness of the on-track battle. "Oscar clarified that his comment was made in anger," Stella said, "but overall, the competition was fair, and we witnessed some great racing."

The strategy behind Piastri's pit stop was primarily to fend off Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who was looming as a threat. Stella explained, "We had to pit Oscar to cover Hamilton's strategy, as giving up track position wasn't an option. Unfortunately, Oscar's collision with a back marker was a setback."

While Piastri's race ended in disappointment, Stella found solace in Norris's performance. "Once Lando got into clean air, his pace was remarkable. He found half a second per lap, which allowed him to pit ahead of Oscar," Stella observed.

McLaren's upgrades seem to be paying off, with both drivers in contention for podiums and wins. "It's sophisticated racing, and the good news is that both drivers are in the mix for top spots," Stella concluded.
