Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto Penalized for Yellow Flag Breach in Azerbaijan GP

Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto found himself in hot water with the stewards after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, where a yellow flag infringement earned him a time penalty. The Brazilian driver initially crossed the line in 13th place during the 51-lap race around the streets of Baku, but was later demoted to 15th and last of the classified finishers. This added to a tough weekend for Audi, with teammate Nico Hulkenberg managing a slightly better finish in 11th.

The incident in question occurred between Turns 6 and 7 on the first lap, following the race's first Safety Car restart. A crash involving Alpine drivers Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, as well as McLaren's Lando Norris, had triggered the display of physical "SC" boards and waved yellow flags by the marshals.

According to the stewards' report, Bortoleto initially heeded the yellow flags but was confused by the lack of electronic signals and the absence of a Safety Car indication on his steering wheel. Furthermore, Audi informed him that the Safety Car had not been deployed. This miscommunication led to Bortoleto overtaking Sergio Perez's Cadillac before the Safety Car was officially in play.

The stewards clarified that although the Safety Car hadn't been deployed, Bortoleto's move still violated the rules, as the yellow flags were active. Consequently, he received a 10-second penalty. The ruling emphasized that a waved yellow flag is a standalone instruction and should be followed regardless of other signals.

Despite the setback, Bortoleto remains optimistic about Audi's upgrades, even though they didn't translate into points in Baku.
