George Russell Puzzles Over Qualifying Setback After Sprint Crash in Singapore

George Russell is grappling with a dip in performance during Singapore GP Qualifying after a Sprint race crash. Despite repairs, his Mercedes didn't match Friday's pace, leaving him to start from the back of the grid.

George Russell found himself in a bit of a conundrum in Singapore. Despite leading the Sprint race around Marina Bay, a crash at the final corner saw him spin into the pit wall. This mishap left Mercedes scrambling to mend the car in time for Qualifying. Though Russell did make it out for the dry session, his earlier speed seemed to have vanished, resulting in only the sixth-fastest time. Not that it matters much, given an engine penalty already had him starting at the back of the grid.

"It was really about ensuring the car felt the same as it did yesterday," Russell explained, reflecting on the day. "Honestly, it didn't quite feel right. Yesterday, I had great pace and was consistently in the top three. Today, not so much — I wasn't even in the top five at any point. I need to figure out why."

Russell's hopes for the main event on Sunday are understandably muted. The nature of the Singapore track doesn't lend itself to dramatic comebacks. Unlike Kimi Antonelli, who climbed from P19 to victory in Monza, Russell isn't expecting any miracles. "It's going to be tough," he admitted. "Kimi starting P19 in Monza and winning, then P16 to P10 in Baku with laps remaining — same driver, similar track, different circumstances."

Despite these challenges, Russell remains determined to salvage some points from the race. "I hope I can get into the points, maybe P7 or P6, depending on how penalties shake out," he mused. "It should be an interesting race, at least."
