George Russell has narrowed Kimi Antonelli's championship lead, reviving his title hopes. With eight races to go, Russell aims to capitalize on familiar tracks and newfound confidence.
George Russell has managed to trim down Kimi Antonelli's championship lead from 81 to 66 points following a strong performance at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This shift revives discussions about Russell's potential to genuinely challenge for the Drivers' Championship. With the Bahrain Grand Prix on the horizon, can Russell maintain this momentum?
Eight rounds remain in the 2026 F1 season, including a Sprint weekend in Singapore. This means a maximum of 208 points is still up for grabs. Currently, Antonelli leads the standings with 302 points, while Russell follows with 236. For Russell to overtake Antonelli, he'd need to outscore him by an average of 8.25 points per race.
However, Russell faces an upcoming grid penalty due to necessary power unit changes—an obstacle Antonelli has already overcome earlier in the season with his impressive P19-P1 comeback in Monza.
Russell's victory in Baku marked his eighth Grand Prix win, with three of those victories happening at tracks featured in the remaining 2026 calendar. His first win came at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022, where he held off pressure from then-teammate Lewis Hamilton. In 2024, he dominated in Las Vegas, and in 2025, he redeemed himself at Singapore after a 2023 mishap, earning praise from Mercedes' team boss Toto Wolff.
Russell has openly discussed his struggles with adapting to F1's latest car regulations, citing early season challenges despite a strong start in Australia. His form dipped after that as Antonelli racked up wins.
Since the summer break, Russell seems to have regained his footing. In Azerbaijan, he secured pole position by over eight-tenths and held off a charging Max Verstappen to claim victory. "I'm proud of the resilience shown by myself and my engineers," Russell remarked, highlighting the hard work required to adapt to the new car and regain confidence.
Antonelli remains the favorite to clinch the 2026 title with a 66-point lead, yet Russell feels the pressure is more on his rival. Reflecting on his strategy, Russell stated, "Win every race. That's the game plan." He acknowledges the impressive season Antonelli has had but remains focused on his own performances.
Russell concluded, "I never lost faith in my abilities. Even during tough times, I knew I'd find my way back. Now, I'm just chasing victories and the rest will follow."
With familiar circuits approaching and a newfound confidence, Russell's bid to challenge Antonelli isn't just a pipe dream—it’s a calculated pursuit.
