As Formula 1 teams head into the summer break, the Hungarian Grand Prix offered plenty of talking points. Lando Norris and McLaren celebrated a long-awaited win, while others faced their own battles at the Hungaroring.
McLaren's Comeback
McLaren has re-entered the winner's circle, thanks to Lando Norris. The Brit delivered a stellar performance to capture McLaren's first win of the 2026 season. Despite losing the lead to his teammate Oscar Piastri at the start, Norris fought back to secure the top spot. Piastri, however, wasn't as fortunate, colliding with Williams' Carlos Sainz and later retiring due to gearbox issues. Norris praised his team's efforts: "The car was beautiful to drive, and I felt very confident."
Red Bull's Unexpected Podium
Max Verstappen's weekend was a mixed bag. Initially struggling with a car he described as "completely broken," Verstappen still managed to turn a P6 start into a second-place finish. A strategic maneuver during pit stops enabled him to overtake Lewis Hamilton and fend off the Ferraris. Teammate Isack Hadjar also played a supporting role, helping Verstappen secure vital points.
Mercedes: A Tale of Two Fortunes
Kimi Antonelli extended his championship lead after a strategic drive to third place, despite a penalty that dropped him to P7 at the start. On the other hand, George Russell's weekend was less rosy. A tough start saw him slip back, and although he recovered to P7, it was not the result he hoped for after a dismal previous race.
Ferrari's Faltering Pace
Ferrari's weekend began with promise, as they led Friday practice sessions. However, penalties and strategy missteps saw them slip from contention. Hamilton, who initially seemed a pole contender, ended up fifth due to penalties, while Charles Leclerc finished fourth after a challenging race.
Racing Bulls Ascend
In the midfield battle, Racing Bulls emerged as 'best of the rest,' surpassing Alpine in the Constructors' standings. Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, both benefiting from recent upgrades, finished in the points, while Alpine failed to score.
F2 and F3 Highlights
In Formula 2, Noel Leon secured his first Feature Race win for Campos Racing, aided by a timely Virtual Safety Car. Meanwhile, Freddie Slater claimed victory in the F3 Feature Race for TRIDENT, edging out championship rival Ugo Ugochukwu.
