Jolyon Palmer: The Strategic Misstep That Cost Hamilton in Singapore

Lewis Hamilton's podium hopes in Singapore were dashed by a strategic error during a Virtual Safety Car period. Jolyon Palmer analyzes how staying out on worn tyres led to his drop down the order.

Lewis Hamilton's efforts at the Singapore Grand Prix were undermined by a strategic choice that left many scratching their heads. Former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer noted that Hamilton's decision to remain on track during the Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period backfired, as he was left grappling with worn soft tyres. This decision, made by Ferrari, seemed peculiar given that Hamilton had already been the first frontrunner to pit off a set of medium tyres that were underperforming at the start.

Staying out under the VSC appeared to be a miscalculation, as it was the ideal moment for Ferrari to execute a pit stop with reduced time loss. This could have been a pivotal move in his battle against Antonelli and the McLaren drivers. Unfortunately, the choice to delay the stop resulted in Hamilton losing ground, ultimately costing him a potential podium finish.
