Kimi Antonelli Receives Grid Penalty for Hungarian GP Due to Yellow Flag Misstep

Kimi Antonelli, the current leader in the F1 championship, has been slapped with a three-place grid penalty for the Hungarian Grand Prix. This comes after a post-Qualifying investigation revealed he failed to sufficiently slow down for yellow flags during Q3, which were brought out following Max Verstappen's spin. The stewards found this to be a breach of Appendix H, Article 2.5.5 b) of the International Sporting Code and B1.8.4a of the FIA F1 Regulations.

Antonelli had initially qualified fourth, provisionally gaining a spot due to Lewis Hamilton's own three-place grid drop for impeding Oscar Piastri. However, with the penalty in place, Antonelli will now start from seventh position on the grid, adding an extra challenge as he seeks to maintain his lead in the Drivers' Championship standings.

In their decision, the stewards noted that while Antonelli did lift off the throttle upon seeing the yellow flags, the reduction in speed was brief and his car's speed was actually higher than his previous lap when passing the incident. His mini sector time was only marginally slower than his best, and the speed reduction was less than 1%. The stewards deemed this insufficient, even though Antonelli lifted off 16 meters earlier, entering the yellow flag sector at 14 km/h slower but passing the incident site 3 km/h faster.

The recommended penalty for such an infraction is typically a five-place grid drop. However, the stewards took into account Antonelli's minimal speed reduction and the limited time he had to react, thus opting for a lower penalty.

In a separate incident during Qualifying, Antonelli also received a warning for driving unnecessarily slowly on an in-lap. It seems the young Italian will have his work cut out for him come race day, as he navigates the tricky Hungaroring from a less-than-ideal starting position.
